The handout I created to reinforce digital citizenship was designed to appeal to the nature of elementary school students. It is presented in a quick and simple set of statements to remind them about specific safety practices, and can be accessed via the above link. When using the school’s computers, all students are expected to adhere to the acceptable use policy they signed early in the school year. Many students, however, forget what they read in that contract or simply didn’t read it to begin with. I care about the safety of my students, and want to gently remind them with this simple visual. The impact this has had on my class is that I can verbally speak to the points on the poster if a reminder is needed, and everyone’s expectations for digital citizenship are instantly reset.
This poster and the resulting positive outcome from my students reflects mastery in ISTE Coach standard 5c, which speaks to modeling and promoting strategies for best practices for all students and teachers. The impact this has had on other educators at my site is a heightened awareness that we are responsible for training our students in the expectations of use within digital context.
